3D Box Maker Professional by Blink Development is a small graphical utility designed to help you create customized software, CD and DVD boxes for use in websites and print media. If you are a small business looking for a way to create box images for software or other media that does not come packaged in a box (i.e., electronic downloads, CD-only delivery) then 3D Box Maker Professional may be just what you are looking for to create a professional image for your advertising needs.

Installation is a snap using a standard Windows installer interface. You have the option to install the program and sample backgrounds and images, or just the program itself. The installer incorporates the ability to also go back and modify or repair an installation should you wish to add more features later on (such as the sample backgrounds) or repair an installation that has stopped working.

The program itself is easy for even a novice to use without having to spend a lot of time reading up on the documentation. Using just your mouse and a few simple keystrokes you can change all sides of your virtual media box. There are even options to allow you to create shadow effects as if the box was sitting on a reflective surface as well as controls to let you manipulate the size of the box it creates.

The hardest part of the program is the graphics. The program itself does not create images for you to use in the design, it merely gives you an option of reading in existing images and using them. Luckily it can read in almost any format of graphics file including PNG, BMP, JPEG and GIF. While it is not an image creator, it does let you use layers and alpha blending of existing images to create your own special effects.

For those of you "image challenged" the registered version comes with 500 stock photos you can use. Both the registered and unregistered version links to a morgueFile.com which is an online service offering both free and subscription images suitable for use with the program.

Overall, the program is easy to use and produces both JPEG and BMP files as final output suitable for online and using it print advertisements. Uninstalling the program is a snap as it uses the standard Windows uninstall mechanism to remove it safely from your system.
